Greener Sports Minds

I encourage the sport sector to use its local and global influence to help address the greatest challenge of our time: climate change. Just like athletes need a strong foundation to compete at their very best, the planet is no different. We need the right conditions to maintain peak performance. For too long we have treated the planet as if we were in a sprint-using all our energy and resources in one short blast. We must understand that, far from a sprint, we are, all together, in the longest of marathons. If we are to be successful, we must make a commitment to our own well-being and longevity.

This Project will be integrated into a set of other activities addressed by the consortium partners. The main focus of all organizations is the practice of sports by youth, always having as a background the integral formation of the human being. Thus, in addition to the practice of sports in several modalities, such as table tennis, volleyball, tennis, badminton, fitness, etc., we can also find activities related to supporting schoolwork as well as cultural activities in the context of choral singing, theatre, drawing, and others. With the implementation of this project, we want to add awareness about the circular economy and environmental sustainability to the training of our young people.

Thereby, this Project is innovative because it’s drawn from a bottom-up perspective that clearly focuses on grassroots movement & development as a way of including the excluded sports and other stakeholders for a problem identified in other domains such as a great awareness of the environmental sustainability and for circular economy. It is true that in all the organizations of the consortium we can find examples of attention towards the circular economy or environmental sustainability (installation of photovoltaic panels for the production of electricity, installation of solar panels for water heating, LED lamp installation, construction of bicycle parks, etc) however, these examples are not the daily reflection of what is happening in our organizations. As they are positive examples that we must consider, the possibility of transforming extraordinary shares into ordinary shares with our “Greener Sports’ Minds” project presents itself as a truly exciting challenge. Therefore, in an innovative way the project is directed with a double benefit for the target groups – healthy lifestyle and environmental policy for a healthier community through sports and games.
